How the UTP Nursing curriculum is organized

UTP's Nursing plan is organized into 10 terms. The first two cover general education and community health; terms three and four concentrate basic sciences and basic nursing; terms five through eight cover specialized care; and terms 9 and 10 are dedicated to the internship and thesis workshop.

UTP itself notes the curriculum is subject to changes as part of its ongoing update process. The delivery mode (on-campus, blended or online) can also change how courses are distributed. Always check the current version for your campus and intake year on the university portal.

Key courses by term

These are the most representative courses UTP publishes at each stage. Exact names may change with curriculum updates.

• Terms 1 and 2: Introduction to University Life, Reading and Writing 1 and 2, Math for Health Sciences, Psychology for Health Sciences, General and Organic Chemistry for Health Sciences, Physics for Health Sciences, Academic Research, English 1 and 2, Health and Community 1 and 2.
• Terms 3 and 4: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Organization and Function of the Human Body 1 and 2, Basic Nursing, Health and Community 3, English 3 and 4, Individual and Environment, Peruvian Current Issues.
• Terms 5 and 6: Pharmacological Bases of Therapy, Biostatistics, Basic Nursing Care and Adult Care, Immunology, Microbiology and Infection, Nursing Legislation and Ethics, Medical-Surgical Nursing Care, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing Care, Epidemiology, Public Health, Nutrition for Health Sciences, Integrative Course 1 and Health and Community 4.
• Terms 7 and 8: Nursing Care of the Older Adult, Nursing Care of Women and Newborns, Nursing Care of Children and Adolescents, Emergency Nursing Care, Nursing Care Management, Bioethics, Management 1, Research Training, Research Workshop, Employability Training and Integrative Course 2.
• Terms 9 and 10: Internship 1 and 2, Thesis Workshop, and Elective 1 and 2.

Internships and practicum: plan them ahead

Internships in the last two terms are full-time and take up almost your entire week, so adding extra courses at that stage is risky. UTP also requires pre-professional practicum hours (360) to graduate, according to the published plan.

Before reaching the internship, review administrative requirements, available sites and insurance. A delayed document in term 9 can cost you a full semester.

Prerequisites and progress at UTP

The backbone of the plan is the care sequence: Basic Nursing unlocks adult care, which unlocks medical-surgical nursing and the other specialties. If you fail a course in that chain, the next one is blocked along with several others.

The community chain is another sensitive one: Health and Community plus Epidemiology support public health and management courses. Review your prerequisites before each registration so you do not fall out of your natural term.

Common mistakes with the UTP Nursing plan

• Using the plan from another delivery mode or intake year without checking the current version
• Leaving electives for the last terms, when no compatible time slots remain
• Not completing the 360 practicum hours before starting the internship
• Adding extra courses during internship terms
• Not recording grades on time and losing track of passed prerequisites
